in october 1917 a man was found guilty of entering queensferry , a restricted area, without a pass. He wanted to get the ferry, pushed passed the security at the enterance to queensferry and was arrested by a policeman - he recieved a 14 day scentence

in june 1916 the government took control of local breweries and 363 licensed premises. nearly 40% of pubs were closed down, advertising of alcohol became ilegal and managers became government employees

this was to raise money to pay for the war. the government increased tax on alcohol - in 1918 a bottle of whisky cost £1, 5 times what it had cost before the outbreak of war
under dora local authority’s could temporarily take land from its owners and turn it over for food production
local authority’s in the highlands used dora to claim land from big estates. they issued short term tenancy agreements to crofters to produce food. However, at the end of the war, many crofters refused to return the land to its original owners
