mines returned to there pre-war owners and despite being in desperate need of investment few owners were interested in doing so

scottish coal mining faced feirce competition from poland and germany - as a result it went into serious decline
production fell from 42.5million tonnes in 1913 - an average of 30million tonnes in the years after the war
