PM lloyd george promised soldures returning home from the war ‘a land fir for hero’s’
this was not actually the case however
some believe the russian revolution of 1917 had showed people change was possible and inspired workers to aim for changes similar as a result of the levels of bad housing, unemployment etc
why did the CWC and STUC propose a cut to working hours?
they agreed a proposal should be put to the government for the working week to be reduced to 40 hours - this would aid unemployment as more people would be required to work
roughly how many workers went on strike on monday 27th january and how was support growing
on monday the 27th january roughly 40,000 workers went on strike - all the big factories came out on strike - and support began to grow outside glasgow
for example 1,500 lanarkshire miners took strike action
how many strikers congregated in george square on friday the 31st january and why
reports vary but 20-60,000 (some say 100,000) workers gathered in george square to hear the outcome of the proposal to the government for a 40 hour working week
police were lined up in the streets around the square

strikers used iron railings and glass bottles against the police to defend themselves
the police retreated from george square - it is believed the government exaggerated the seriousness of events however fighting continued into the night. official figures state 34 strikers and 19 policemen were injured

the cabinet was informed that tanks and lorries were going to glasgow aswell ad thousands of soldures who camped in and around glasgow for many days after the events
