Q

artilary shells destroyed the drainage systems put in place by french farmers and so the trenches constantly flooded which created alot of mud

A

Mud would cling to scots kilts or freeze at the hem and would cut the backs of their legs
many chose to work without their kilts because it was easier to scrape mud off of bare legs

Q

Lice was also a huge issue for scots in the trenches because men on the front line didnt get a chance to wash

A

Lice hid in the folds of kilts and eggs hid in the seems.
Lice would cause itchy sores around the neck rists and ankles and they also caused trench fever. Recovery from trench fever required time away from the trenches
