between 1914-1918 a total of 481 warships were built on the clyde
skilled workers could not volenteer and what were they exempt from and after what year
how many workers did beardmore’s employ and what did they (along with browns do to keep workers)
after 1916 skilled workers within shipbuilding were also exempt from conscription after 1916
by 1915 beardmores employed 20,000 scots workers - to keep workers browns and beardmores built more housing
after the great war what happened to shipbuilding
scottish shipbuilding went into decline after the great war
shipyards were returned to there pre-war owners and whilst initially there was a slight boom in production (building passenger liners and merchant ships lost due to the war) this only lasted until 1921
which foreign shipyards provided feirse competition and what happened alongside this
Scottish shipyards experienced fierce competition from foreign yards in japan and germany and alongside this the government drove prices down which meant ships were being built at a loss
from 1921-1923 the tonnage built on the clyde went down from 510,000 to 170,000
