The heart Flashcards
How many chambers are there in the heart?
4.
What are the chambers of the heart?
- Right atrium.
- Right ventricle.
- Left atrium.
- Left ventricle.
What makes up the right pump?
- Right atrium.
- Right ventricle.
What makes up the left pump?
- Left atrium.
- Left ventricle.
What is the interventricular septum?
- A muscular wall.
- Separates the right and left sides of the heart.
- Prevents blood from both sides mixing.
What prevents the backflow of blood within the heart?
Four one-way valves.
What are the four one-way valves within the heart?
- 2 atrioventricular valves.
- 2 semilunar valves.
What are the 2 different atrioventricular valves?
- Tricuspid valve.
- Mitral valve.
What are the 2 different semilunar valves?
- Pulmonary semilunar valve.
- Aortic semilunar valve.
What does the tricuspid valve do?
Prevents the backflow of blood between the right atrium + right ventricle.
What does the mitral valve do?
Prevents the backflow of blood between the left atrium + left ventricle.
What does the pulmonary semilunar valve do?
Prevents the backflow of blood into the right ventricle.
What does the aortic semilunar valve do?
Prevents the backflow of blood into the left ventricle.
What are the 3 layers of tissue that make up the heart?
- Epicardium.
- Myocardium.
- Endocardium.
Describe the characteristics of the epicardium layer of the heart.
- Serous membrane.
- Includes blood + lymph capillaeries.
- As well as nerve fibres.
