was harsh and caused a full-scale Palestinian uprising or Intifada

- thousands were jailed without trial, tortured and deported
- by 1987 there were 200,000 in jails

-day later 4 Palestinians killed in a road accident
Dec 12 - 6 Palestinians had died and 30 injured

- 3,600 Molotov cocktail attacks
- 100 hand grenade attacks
- 600 assaults with guns or explosives

- 16 civilians killed
- 11 soldiers killed
- 1,400 civilians injured
- 1,700 soldiers injured
PLO
called for an end to violence
-from 1989-92 it had claimed the lives of almost 1000 Palestinians
the movement
demonstrated that Arabs could act cohesively with the assistance of their neighbouring states
- brought world attention to the plight of the refugees
role of USA
- sympathy for the Palestinians in US and Jews were questioning the actions of the military
- US changed their policy towards the PLO, when they accepted the state of Israel
