Agreements:
Egypt- agreed to let Israel use the Suez Canal and the Straits of Tiran
Israel- agreed to withdraw from Sinai
1979
formal Peace Treaty signed between Israel and Egypt, recognising their borders and rights to exist
results:
it showed progress but no agreement could be made over the Palestinians
US Reaction
- didn’t solve the Palestinian problem or secure them legitimate rights
- a diplomatic triumph
Egypt reaction
- gained Sinai- object of the 1973 war
- had $1.5 billion US aid to rebuild economy
- Sadat assassinated in 1981 by Islamic extremists unhappy with the peace with the enemy
Arab reaction
- Saw Sadat as selling out to the west
- broke off trade with Egypt as well as cutting off relations with them
