Israel retaliated to Egypt closing the Straits of Tiran by destroying 90% of Egypt’s air force, 70% of Syria’s and almost all of Jordans
defeat of 1967
was a major setback for Nasser, not only because 80% of its military equipment had been destroyed
when Sadat took over
the economy was stagnant and many were frustrated with government inefficiency and corruption
Sadat’s aim for the economy
to encourage foreign investment, reduce government expenditure and to obtain support of the business classes

reduce Soviet influence and open the way for closer relations with the west

Egypt was hailed as the hero of the Arab cause
but in 1979 it was scorned for abandoning the Arab cause
Mubarak
succeeded in revising Egypt’s status amongst the Arab states and in 1987 the League of Arab States resumed diplomatic relations with Egypt
