Mother, father and children living as one unit
What is an extended family?
Mother, father, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles e.t.c all living nearby or together
What is surrogacy?
When a women becomes pregnant and gives birth for a couple who are unable to have children
What is the Ummah?
The community of muslims around the world
What does Islam say about the treatment of family members
Islam promotes love and kindness between family members at all levels. Each member of the family have certain roles/responsibilities. Parents/elders in the household should be treated with respect and should be prayed for as they have a crucial part to play in raising the children and preparing the next generation of Muslims.
Why are teachings about families important to Muslims today?
- Islam teaches that one of the purposes of Islam is procreation
- Raising children properly is a way of strengthening the ummah as the children can continue with their religious practices and traditions e.t.c
- They remind Muslims how much Allah cares about families
- Muslims believe they provide an ideal to aspire to, and are the key to a harmonious home
- Muslims believe Muhammad was the best example to follow of how to treat relatives
- They can be consulted in times of difficulty in order to resolve any issues
What are Muslim responses to nuclear families?
Most Muslims pace the greatest value on this type of family as this is how the Prophet Muhammad lived
What are Muslim responses to extended families?
This is common in many Muslim families due to the importance given to caring for one’s parents and other relatives
What are Muslim responses to single-parent families?
Single-parent families are is when one parent dies or a parent divorces or separates from their partner and becomes responsible for any children. Most Muslims would prefer that the parent not remain single as they believe both a mother and father are required to ensure a proper upbringing for the children
What are Muslim responses to same-sex families?
Muslims oppose this family type as they believe that Allah created man to be with woman
What are Muslim responses to blended families?
Most Muslims would agree that blended families are better than single-parent families as they bring two groups of people together
