State some reasons as to why marriage is significant to Muslims
- It’s considered a religious duty and follows the practice of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H)
- It promotes the sharing of love and companionship between 2 people
- Acts as a moral safeguard and prevents Muslims from casual relationships and not treating sex as special
- It provides a framework for a couple to have children and raise them up in Islam
- It symbolizes religious and social unity as it brings families, friends, and others together
State and explain a quote that shows that Muslim women must agree to a marriage
‘You who believe, It is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will’ (Qu’ran, Surah 4:19)
In islam, a nikah (contract) must take place to seal the marriage and it must be signed to both man and woman to show that they agree to the marriage. This is essential as it is important in islam that the bride and groom approve to avoid things such as divorce
What are non-religious attitudes to marriage?
Marriage:
- is a public declaration of a couple’s love
- Can provide financial and emotional stability for the family
- Is not necessary for the expression of love between 2 people
- Can often lead to divorce
- Confirms a commitment 2 people have made to each other
- Requires a wedding ceremony which many people cannot afford
What are some Muslim responses to alternatives to marriage i.e cohabitation?
- Sex is only permitted within marriage
- Marriage helps to protect the couple from any sin and temptations they might face if they were not married
- Performing the nikah means the relationship is taken more seriously within the marriage and both partners are more committed to the relationship
