Contraception Flashcards
What is coitus interruptus?
When the penis is removed from the vagina before ejaculation
What is contraception?
The deliberate prevention of pregnancy
What is family planning?
When the couple consider whether or not to have a child
What is situation ethics?
The idea that people should base moral decisions on what is the most loving thing to do
What are Muslim teachings and attitudes about contraception and family planning?
- Some Muslims scholars believe that contraception is forbidden due to some teachings and due to the fact that Islam is pro-life and regards children as a blessing
2- However, some Muslims believe that temporary and reversible forms of contraception are acceptable within the marriage, particularly just after the birth of a child
3- The Prophet expressed his disapproval on coitus interruptus but did not forbid it
What other situations do some Muslims justify the use of contraceptives?
1- If pregnancy could result in the mother’s death
2- To save conceiving a child that might inherit an illness from a parent
3- If they feel couples should be able to make their own decisions about the size of their family
What are non-religious attitudes to family planning?
- Non-religious people do not believe in God, and so do not consider religious beliefs/teachings as relevant
- Contraception and family planning allows a couple (including those who are not financially or emotionally ready) to express their love for each other without the possibility of having children
- Many adults may not want to have children until later, but would still like to have an active sex life and so they may use contraception for this reason
