The eye Flashcards
what is the sclera?
- The white of the eye
- tough fibrous coat
- helps maintain shape of the eye and protects internal contents
- Can become yellow due to certain diseases
What is the cornea
- transparent anterior portion of the eye
- overlays the iris and pupil
- acts as a structural barrier
- protects eye against infections
What is the Conjunctiva
- Mucus membran that covers the sclera and the internal surface of the eyelid
What is the iris and pupil
- The iris is the coloured portion of the eye it contains muscles that contract and dilate the pupil
- also contains blood vessels
- the pupil is the circular opening which light passes through
What is the lens
- Found behind the pupil
- transparent structure
- can alter thickness depending on visial needs
What is the retina
- 10 layered structure of nervous tissue that extends from the optic nerve
- Recieves light impulses and converts them into nerve signals which are sent to the brain via the optic nerve
What is the anterior chamber and what is ti filled with
- Portion between lense and cornea
- filled with Aqueous humour clear watery fluid
- this fluid can be replenished
What is the posterior chamber and what is it filled with
- The portion between lense and retina
- filled with Vitreous humour jelly like substance
- Can not be replenished when depleated
What is the globe and where is it contained and how is it held in place
The globe is the eyeball and it is contained in the Oribit (eyesocket)
The eyeball is held inplace via loose connective tissue and nerves
What is the function of the oculomotor nerve
The 4th crainal nerve innervates the muscle and assists with movement of the eyeball
Also contains Parasympathetic fibers that can constrict and accomidate the lens
What does the Trochlear nerve do?
It inables movement of the eyes to look up and down and back and forth
What are the 2 types of vision
- Central vision : incharge of images directly infront and is processed by the macula (central portion of the retina)
- Peripheral vision: provides visulization of lateral images when looking forward
- process by remaining retina
What is the Lacrimal apparatus
Secrets and drains tears from the eyes
* Lacrimal gland: creates tears
* Lacrimal ducts: drain tears into the lacrima sacs which empty in the nasal cavity via the nasolacrimal duct
