The central nervous system (CNS) Flashcards
What is the Central nervous system (CNS)
The CNS is incharge of thought, perception, feelings and autonomic body functions
The CNS recieves impulses from the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What is the anatomy of the CNS
- The brain
- Brainstem
- Spinal cord
What is the Diencephalon what are the sections in it and what do they do
the diencephalon includes the Hypothalamus and the thalamus
* Hypothalamus: controls various homeostasis functions and directs hormone secretions
* Thalamus: Relays most sensory information from the spinal cord and certain parts of brain to the cerebral cortex
* It interprets certain sensory information like pain, temp and pressure and filters out unneed information
What does the Brainstem comprised of and what do they do
The brainstem includes: Pons, medulla oblongta and the midbrain, it helps free up cerebral cortex for higher level activites
* Pons: incharge of regulating the respiratory rate and depth
* Midbrain: incharge of regulating level of consciousness through the reticular activating system (RAS)
* Medulla oblongata: regulates BP and HR
What regulates emotions?
The limbic system regulates emotions such as rage and anger and the hypothalamus regulates emotions such as pleasure, thirst and hunger
The Hypothalamus sends signals to the adreanal glands which release hormones that play a role in the regulation of emotions
The Prefrontal cortex mediates all emotions developed by the limbic system and hypothalamus
What does the Cerebellum do
The Cerebellum manages complex motor activites
* Keeps body position, equillibrium and coordination
* Repetitive task from the prefrontal cortex get sent here
* located beneth the cerebral hemisphere
