Integumentary system Flashcards
What are the 4 functions of the skin and describe them
1.Defense: Protects underlying tissues and structures from injury, UV radiation, temperature, and invading micro organsims
2.Thermoregulation: Helps regulate the bodies temperature by both preventing and facilitating heat loss
3.Water loss: Prevents excessive water loss which helps maintain internal chemical balance
4.Sensation: sensory nerves relay information about the external enviroment to the brain like touch, temperature, pain, pressure, texture.. ect
What is the outermost layer of the skin called and what are they layers called
The epidermis is the outer most layer and the first layer of protection for the body
Consists of 5 levels:
1.Stratum corneum (outermost)
2.stratum lucidum
3.stratum granulosum
4.stratum spinosum
5.stratum basal (innermost)
What layer can melanin be found
The stratum basal
What layer can melanin be found
The stratum basal
what is desquamation
The process of constant shedding and replacing of the stratum corneum
What is the second layer of the skin and describe it
Dermis
a fibrous tough and highly elastic layer made up of connective tissue
What is found in the connective tissue layer of the dermis and what do they do?
- Collagen fibers: fibrous protein that provides the skin with its resistance to breakage
- Elastin fibers: provide the skin with its elastic properties
- Mucopolusaccharide gel: provides the skin with resistance to compression
Where are nerve endings and blood vessels found in the skin
In the dermis
What do cutaneous blood vessels do?
- Help regulate body temperature by controlling blood volume to the skin
What are the exocrine glands in the skind and where are they found
The sweat glands and sebacous glands
The sweat glands produce sweat and discharge. Evaportaion of the h20 from the sweat is 1 major way of thermoregulation
Sebacous glands produce oily substances at the base of the hair follicle
What layer are hair follicles found in
the dermis
What is below the epidermis and dermis and what is it made of and its function
The subcutaneous layer:
Made up of Adipose tissue
Provides insulation from extreme temperatures
Is an energy source and a cushion for the body
