Spinal column Flashcards
1
Q
How many vertebra are there?
A
33 total
2
Q
What are the 5 sections of the spinal column and how many vertebra do they have in each section
A
- Cervical (7 vertebra)
- Thoracic (12 vertebra)
- Lumbar (5 vertebra)
- Sacral (5 vertebra)
- Coccyx (5 vertebra)
3
Q
What do the cervical vertebra do and what movements do they allow
A
- Support weight of head
- protect beginning of Spinal column
- provide passage way for bloodflow into the brain
- MOVEMENT
- Flexion (bending chin forward)
- Extension (bending chin backwards)
- Rotation
- lateral flexion
4
Q
What is the difference between C-1 and C-2 and what movements do they do
A
- C-1 Atlas:
- Has no body or spinous process
- holds weight of head
- widest of the cervical vertebra due to ransverse process extending further
- MOVEMENTS:
- Flexion and extension
- small rotation
- C-2 Axis:
- MOVEMENT: Side to side
5
Q
What do the Thoracic vertebra do? And a difference between these vertebra and the others
A
- Extra stabilzed due to attachment to the Ribs
- Carries large portion of upper body
- Larger Spinous process
6
Q
What do the vertebra in the lumbar spine do?
A
- Largest vertebra in the spine
- Carries large portion of upper body weight
7
Q
What do the vertebra in the sacrum and coccyx look like
A
The vertebra in these 2 sections are fused together and the coccyx are the smallest vertebra
