The Expanding Universe Flashcards

1
Q

What is red shift?

A

This is when light observed from distant galaxies has been ‘shifted’ towards the red end of the spectrum. It means the frequency has decreased and the wavelength increased.

Q

What is the Doppler effect?

A

This states that as a wave source moves towards an observer, the wavelength decreases but the frequency increases. So, when the wave source moves away from the observer, the wavelength increases but the frequency decreases.
