Electromagnetic Waves Flashcards
In order of decreasing wavelength, increasing frequency and increasing energy, name the EM spectrum.
Radio waves Microwaves Infrared radiation Visible light Ultraviolet radiation X-rays Gamma radiation
What are EM waves?
EM waves are electric and magnetic disturbances that transfer energy from one place to another.
What objects or devices use IR?
Remote controls
IR cameras/scanners
Why are microwave radiation and radio waves dangerous?
They can penetrate your skin and are absorbed by body tissue which can heat internal organs and possibly damage them.
Why is IR potentially dangerous?
If too much is absorbed by your skin, it could burn your skin.
What speed do all EM waves travel at?
300 million m/s
What EM waves do mobile phones use?
Microwaves
What are optical fibres?
These are very thin glass fibres used to transmit signals carried by visible light or IR. The signals travel down the fibre by internal reflection.
What can Radio waves be used for in communication?
TV broadcasts
