What is an endocrine gland?
a specialised group of cells that secrete hormones directly into the blood.
Where is the pituitary gland?
at the base of the brain
which three hormones does the pituitary gland produce?
Growth, anti diuretic and gonadotrophins
What does the thyroid gland produce and what is the role of this?
thyroxine which controls the rate of the metabolism and rate at which glucose is used up in respiration
What does the adrenal gland produce?
adrenaline - increases HR and BR
What does the pineal gland produce?
melatonin - affects reproductive development and sleep cycles
What does the thymus produce?
thymosin - production of white blood cells.
What’s the role of the pancreas?
to produce insulin and glucagon to control blood glucose concs
Which hormones do the ovaries produce?
oestrogen and progesterone
Which hormone do the testes produce?
testosterone
