Population and sustainability Flashcards
What are the two types of limiting factors for population size?
abiotic and biotic factors
What is the carrying capacity?
the max population size that the environment can support
What is immigration?
movement of individuals into an area
What is emmigration?
movement of individuals from an area
What are the two types of competition?
interspecific and intraspecific
What is the competitive exclusion principle?
two species have overlapping niches but one is better adapted so out competes the other causing a population decline
Explain population changes for intraspecific variation?
no limiting factors so population increases, food becomes limiting so population declines, smaller population means resource is no longer limiting so growth can occur again
What type of competition is predation?
interspecific competition
What is conservation?
the active maintenance of biodiversity through human management and education
What is sustainable development?
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What is preservation?
the protection of an area by removing humans.
Why is conservation important?
to provide resources that humans need to survive and provides an income, natural beauty is there to be enjoyed and all organisms have a right to exist and we dont get to decide which do and dont
What is a sustainable resource?
one that is economically exploited but will not run out or diminish
What are the 5 aims of sustainability?
- preserve the environment
- ensure resources are available for future generations
- allow all humans to live comfortably
- enable LEDCs to develop using their own resources
- create an even balance in consumption of resources
Explain the process of coppicing?
cut trunk close to ground, new shoots grow from cut surface, these mature and are then cut with more growing in their place, young shoots must be protected from grazers, this process can be repeated indefinitely
