Communication and homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
What is the role of receptors?
to detect their specific stimuli
What is an effector?
A cell that causes a response to a certain stimulus
How does cell signalling occur?
locally through neurotransmitters or longer distances through the release of hormones, cell-surface-receptors recognise these chemicals and communicate with effectors
What are the main two things that homeostasis controls?
body temp and blood glucose conc
Explain a simple homeostatic system?
receptors detect when a level is too high or too low, info is communicated to effectors via either hormonal or nervous system, effectors respond to counteract the change bringing level back to normal. (negative feedback)
