hormonal communication Flashcards
What are steroid hormones?
lipid soluble hormones that can pass through phospholipid bilayer and bind to receptors within the cell
What are non steroid hormones?
hydrophilic hormones so cannot pass through the cell surface membrane so bind to receptors on the membrane triggering second messengers.
Name some differences between hormonal and neuronal communication?
Hormonal - slower, longer lasting, wide-spreading effect, travel in blood stream, slower respsonse
Name the two parts of the adrenal glands?
adrenal cortex (essential) and adrenal medulla (non essential)
Which hormones does the adrenal cortex produce?
steroid hormones essential for life (glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and androgens)
What is the role of glucocorticoids (2 hormones)?
cortisol - helps regulate metabolism, blood pressure
corticosterone - regulates immune response, suppresses inflammatory reactions
Which two hormones does the adrenal medulla produce?
adrenaline and noradrenaline
