Biodiversity and sampling Flashcards
What are the 3 types of biodiversity?
habitat, species and genetic
What is species diversity?
The number of different species (species richness) and abundance of each species in an area (species evenness).
What is habitat diversity?
The number of different habitats in an area
What is genetic diversity?
The variation of alleles within a species
Describe how sampling is done?
- choose area
- count number of individuals of each species
- repeat
How is random sampling achieved?
Divide area into a grid using two tape measures at 90 degrees. Using a random number generator, get x and y coords. place quadrat and count.
What are the three types of non random sampling?
systematic, stratified and opportunistic
What is stratified sampling?
Different areas in a habitat are sampled separately in proportion to their part of the habitat as a whole.
Which two transect techniques are used in systematic sampling?
belt and line transect
