Immunity and Vacinations Flashcards
What are the two types of immunity?
Active - immune system makes its own antibodies
Passive - given antibodies made by another organism
What is active natural and active artificial immunity?
Natural = become immune after catching a disease artificial = immunity after being given a vaccination
What is passive natural and passive artificial immunity?
Natural = baby becomes immune due to the antibodies received from its mother via milk or placenta artificial = injected with the antibodies from another organism
What is an autoimmune disease?
Antigens present on organism’s own cells. Immune system can’t recognise which are self and which are non-self. This causes the immune system to attack its own tissue’s.
What’s the job of vaccines?
Controlling disease and prevention of epidemics.
What do vaccines contain?
dead or weakened antigens that trigger an immune response but don’t cause illness or damage the body.
What’s the difference between vaccination and immunisation?
Vaccination is the administration of the antigens into the body. Immunisation is the process by which you develop immunity. Vaccination causes immunisation.
