The Digestive System Flashcards
The digestive system has 3 jobs…
- Breaks down food into smaller molecules our cells can use
- Absorbs food into our circulatory system (bloodstream)
- Eliminates waste products
Digestive system
Made up of all of the organs in our body in charge of breaking down food
Food enters the digestive system where it is ———————
Broken down into simpler molecules that can move from the digestive system to the bloodstream
The nutrients are then moved into the —— where it can be taken to the rest of the body to feed your body’s —–
Blood
Cells
Mechanical digestion
The physical process of breaking food down into smaller pieces
Chemical digestion
Process of changing food on a molecular level. This happens because of the action of the enzymes in your digestive system
Step 1
- food is ingested (put into your mouth) and you chew
- chewing is a form of mechanical digestion
Step 2
- chemical digestion now begins in your mouth
- saliva contains a digestive enzyme called amylase
Step 3
- Once food is chewed, the food is swallowed
- the esophagus is the muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
Step 4
Food moves down the esophagus by peristalsis
Step 5
- The stomach is a muscular pouch like structure in the digestive tract
- both mechanical and chemical digestion take place in the stomach
Step 6
Food digestion is completed in the first half of the small intestine through mechanical and chemical digestion
Pancreas
- Secretes insulin which breaks down sugar
- secretes bicarbonate, which neutralizes stomach acid
Liver
Produces bile it break down fat
Digested food moves through the rest of the small intestine and passes over thousands of —–
