Cells and Tissues Flashcards
Cell membrane
Separates cell from surroundings, made of lipid bilayer
Organelle
Part of a cell
Nucleus
Control center of cell, surrounded by double membrane (nuclear envelope), contains DNA in chromosomes
Cytoplasm
Includes fluid inside cells called CYTOSOL and organelles
Mitochondria
Break down food molecules to make energy (ATP)
Rough ER
Folded membranes attached to nucleus, protein synthesis for membrane bound (integral) proteins & secreted proteins, ribosomes embedded in the surface
Smooth ER
Lipid synthesis, folded membranes attached to nucleus, no ribosomes
Golgi apparatus
Processes proteins for export out of the cell
Nucleolus
Makes ribosomes
Ribosome
Non membranous organelles that make proteins by assembling amino acids into polypeptide chains
Lysosome
Digests food particles and recycles old organelles
Vesicles
Membrane bound compartments going in and out of the cell
Vacuole
Stores water and other materials, small
In animals, large in plants
Chloroplast
Found in plant cells, where photosynthesis takes place
Cell wall
Surrounds plant cells, rigid, gives structure and support
Cell theory
- All living things or organisms are made of cells and their products
- New cells are created by old cells dividing into two
- Cells are the basic units of life
Robert Hooke
First person to discover the cell
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
First person to see a live cell under a microscope
Matthias Jakob Schleiden
Found all plants are composed of cells
Theodor Schwann
“All living things are composed of cells and cell products”
Rudolf Virchow
“Every cell originates from another existing cell like it” (omnis e cellula e cellula)
Homeostasis
Body’s ability to regulate its internal environment
Cell
Smallest unit that carries out all of the tasks of living things
Tissue
A group of similar cells working cells working together
Organ
A collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body
Organ system
Group of organs working together
Organism
Living thing made of cells
Epithelial tissue
Covers and protects the tissues beneath
Nervous tissue
Sends electrical signals through the body
Muscle tissue
Contract and relax to produce movement
Connective tissues
Joins and supports and cushions organs
