Heart
What does the cardio system do?
Transports substances to cells and takes wastes away from cells
What is the cardiovascular made up of?
Blood, heart, and blood vessels
The heart has 4 chambers
2 upper – atria
2 lower – ventricles
Septum
A wall that separates the right side of the heart from the left side
Atrium
Each upper chamber that receives blood from the body
Ventricle
Each lower chamber that pumps blood out of the heart
Right atrium
Blood from the body enters the heart thru the right atrium
Left atrium
Blood from the lungs enters through the left atrium
Ventricles
When the atria contract, blood flows into the ventricles
Valves
Flaps of connective tissue that are located between the atria and ventricles
When ventricles contract what happens to the valves and why?
Valves close, preventing blood from flowing back into the atria
The system of the valves keeps blood moving through the heart in —– direction
