Immune System Flashcards
What makes antibodies?
Special WBC called a B cell
Antibodies
Proteins made by the immune system that attach to microbes to aid in their elimination
Antigen
Part of a microbe that is recognized by an antibody
Where are B cells formed?
In bone marrow
B cells make
Antibodies
Plasma cells
Activated B cells that make antibodies
T cells are made for their
Maturation in the thymus
T cells can
- Directly kill infected cells
- instruct other immune cells during infections
Neutrophils
- Type of phagocyte (eats microbes) and are normally found in the bloodstream
- first responders at the beginning of inflammation
Eosinophils
- WBCs responsible for combating multicellular endo parasites
- found in the lower gastrointestinal tract, ovary, uterus, spleen, and lymph nodes
Basophils
- store histamine
- important in the response to ectoparasites
Histamine
Chemical that causes some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction
Monocytes
Move to sites of infection in the tissues and divide/differentiate into macrophages after entering into the tissue spaces stored in spleen
Half of the body’s monocytes are stored in the
Spleen
Macrophages
- phagocytes
- function in both non specific defense as well as help initiate specific defense mechanisms
