Hormone Control Flashcards
Gland
A group of cells that produce hormones
Hormone
The chemical messenger made in glands that travel through the blood to specific parts of the body
There are — main glands in the human body
9
Pineal gland
Deep in the brain
Makes MELATONIN which controls sleep
Hypothalamus
Attached to the pituitary gland
Makes hormones that tell the pituitary gland to start or stop making hormones
Make antidiuretic hormone
Pituitary gland
At the base of the brain, above the roof of the mouth
Makes over a dozen different hormones that regulate other glands, control growth, and hormones called ENDORPHINS that control pain
Thyroid
In the throat, under the larynx
Makes THYROXINE which regulates growth and metabolism
Parathyroid
Part of the thyroid
Parathyroid hormone regulates calcium levels in the blood
Thymus
In your chest, over the heart
Makes THYMOSIN and THYMOPOETIN which regulate the immune system
Adrenal glands
On top of the kidneys
Produce many hormones, most importantly ADRENALINE/EPINEPHRINE
Adrenaline causes the fight or flight response in stressful situations
Also secrete cotisol which promotes the breakdown of fat and protein
Pancreas
Makes the hormones INSULIN (transport glucose in to cells) and GLUCAGON (increases glucose in blood)
The ovaries and testes are in the —— ————-. They make hormones that control ——- ———–.
