Respiratory System Flashcards
Nose
- naso pharyngeal passage
* primary airway
Mouth
secondary airway
Bronchioles
small branches that carry air to lungs
red blood cell
carry oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body
epiglottis
- guards the opening between vocal folds while one is swallowing
- it prevents food from going into the trachea and instead directs it to the esophagus which is posterior
left lung
smaller to fit heart
right lung
bigger lung
lungs
- essential organ for breathing
* transporting oxygen from the atmosphere to tissues, and carbon dioxide
alveoli
- tiny sacs that are covered in capillaries
* exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide takes place here
pharynx
- back of nasal cavity
* branches into 2 tubes: the stomach and the lungs
larynx
contains vocal cords
bronchi
- one bronchus goes to each lung: left and right
* the bronchi branch into thousands of tubes
pulmonary circulation
blood flow between heart and lungs
diaphragm
- inferior to lungs
* contraction and relaxation controls inhalation and exhalation
trachea
the tube that carries air to the lungs
capillary
smallest blood vessel that diffuses nutrients from the blood into tissues
cellular respiration
- process of converting sugar and oxygen to ATP and carbon dioxide
- takes place in mitochondria
