The Control of Gene Expression: Using Genome Projects Flashcards
1
Q
What is a genome?
A
- Complete set of genes of a cell
2
Q
What are the uses of determining the genome of simpler organisms?
A
- Allows the sequences of the proteins in the proteome of the organism to be determined
- This can be used to identify potential antigens for vaccine production
3
Q
What is a proteome?
A
- Entire set of proteins that a cell can produce
4
Q
Why is determining the genome of simpler organisms easier than in more complex organisms?
A
- Simple organisms e.g bacteria don’t have much non-coding DNA so genome can be easily translated into proteome
- Complex organisms have large sections of non-coding DNA: regulatory genes (transcription factors), introns, base repeats
5
Q
How effective are sequencing methods in genome projects?
A
- Sequencing methods are continuously updated and have become automated
