Q

Can all cells divide?

A

• No, not all cells in multicellular organisms retain the ability to divide
- Eukaryotic cells that do divide show a cell cycle

Q

Different Stages of the Cell Cycle

A
  • Interphase - period of cell growth and DNA replication
  • Mitosis - period of cell division
  • G0 phase - dormancy period during interphase, cell is neither replicating its DNA nor preparing to divide
  • Interphase is subdivided into three different growth stages: G1, S and G2
  • Cytokinesis - division of the cytoplasm occurs, producing two new cells

Q

Describe when DNA replication and mitosis occur during the cell cycle

A
  • DNA replication occurs during the interphase of the cell cycle
  • Mitosis is the part of the cell cycle in which a eukaryotic cell divides to produce two daughter cells, each with the identical copies of DNA produced by the parent cell during DNA replication
