Cells: The Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
Can all cells divide?
A
• No, not all cells in multicellular organisms retain the ability to divide
- Eukaryotic cells that do divide show a cell cycle
2
Q
Different Stages of the Cell Cycle
A
- Interphase - period of cell growth and DNA replication
- Mitosis - period of cell division
- G0 phase - dormancy period during interphase, cell is neither replicating its DNA nor preparing to divide
- Interphase is subdivided into three different growth stages: G1, S and G2
- Cytokinesis - division of the cytoplasm occurs, producing two new cells
3
Q
G1
A
• Growth phase 1
- Cell grows
- New organelles and proteins are made
4
Q
S
A
• Synthesis phase
- DNA replication and synthesis
5
Q
G2
A
• Growth phase 2
- Cell keeps growing
- Proteins needed for cell division are made
6
Q
Describe when DNA replication and mitosis occur during the cell cycle
A
- DNA replication occurs during the interphase of the cell cycle
- Mitosis is the part of the cell cycle in which a eukaryotic cell divides to produce two daughter cells, each with the identical copies of DNA produced by the parent cell during DNA replication
