The cognitive approach to treating depression Flashcards
Cognitive behavioural therapy CBT
get us to change our underlying thoughts and behaviours that are contributing to our depression
Rational emotive behavioural therapy REBT
works by changing negative irrational thoughts into positive rational thoughts. It extends Ellis’ model to ABCDE.
D- we dispute these negative consequences
E- and see the effect this will have
3 different ways we can challenge irrational thoughts
- Logically disputing: why those thoughts don’t make sense
- Empirically disputing: finding evidence against those thoughts
- Pragmatically disputing: working out what would happen in your life if you continue this way.
Evaluation strength: March et al (2007)
found that CBT was just as effective as medication in terms of improving depressive symptoms and even more effective when used in combination with drugs.
Evaluation weakness: dependent on the therapist
If the patient does not develop a good relationship with the therapist, they will not benefit from any of the strategies in session.
Evaluation weakness: requires motivation
patients have to complete homework assignments between sessions to practice strategies.
Evaluation weakness: issues with causation
an unpleasant environment may be causing depression and no amount of positive thinking will change this.
Evaluation weakness: not suitable for all patients
i.e. those who struggle to articulate their thoughts and feelings will not benefit as they cannot find what is causing their depression.
