Multi store model Flashcards
definition
the model outlines the structure of memory and how we remember things.
1.
it proposes that information from our environment goes into our sensory register which stores information relating to our five senses. (iconic and echoic)
2.
Sensory memory has a high capacity but a duration of less than half a second so it stores a lot of information but not for very long
3.
Information you pay attention to then goes into your STM where it remains for a matter of seconds if not rehearsed. (capacity of 7+or-2 items)
4.
Maintenance rehearsal helps keep information in STM and if repeated long enough, transfers in LTM. this is also retrieved from LTM
Evaluation strength: Peterson & Peterson (1959)
found that only approximately 10% of participants could remember trigrams after 18 secs if not allowed to rehearse them.
Evaluation weakness: more than one type of LTM
prodedural, semantic, episodic
Evaluation weakness: more than one type of STM
working memory suggests separate stores for visual and auditory information.
Evaluation weakness: more than one type of rehearsal
elaborative rehearsal: analyse something on a deeper level
Evaluation weakness: issues with support
