Cultural variations: Van Ijzendoorn Flashcards
AIM
to investigate the different proportions of attachment figures in different countries.
METHOD
meta analysis of 32 studies in 8 different countries using almost 2000 children. they also investigated the differences within cultures.
FINDINGS
Most common: securely attached
second most: insecure avoidant
Israel & Japan: insecure-resistant
Germany: insecure avoidant
CONCLUSION
as a result of the different ways in which the countries bring up their children.
Evaluation strength: good internal validity
good sample of almost 2000 children took part in the 32 studies analysed
Evaluation weakness: strange situation is flawed
Germans bring up their children to be more independent, Japanese infants spent the first year of their life in close contact with their mother.
Evaluation weakness: it may not be measuring attachment
research by Kagan suggests that people are born with a certain temperament which could affect their attachment type more than how they were brought up.
