Animal studies of attachment: Lorenz Flashcards
AIM
to investigate whether baby geese would imprint on humans
METHOD
He randomly allocated half the eggs to be hatched in a natural environment (control group) and the other half in an incubator (experiment group)
FINDINGS
the incubator group imprinted on Lorenz and followed him everywhere even when the mother was introduced to them. There was also a critical period of a few hours after birth.
Sexual imprinting can also occur.
Evaluation weakness: generalisability
Human attachment involves a greater amount of emotion.
Evaluation weakness: not permanent
Guiton et al (1966) found that chickens would learn appropriate mating towards others after being made to imprint on yellow washing gloves.
