Resistance to social influence: locus of control Flashcards
defintion
relates to how much influence a person believes they have over their own behaviour.
high internal
think that how their life turns out is completely down to the decisions they make. They are more likely to be independent and resist social influence
high external
think that what happens in their life is completely determined by factors outside of their control. They are less likely to be independent as they believe their lives are controlled by factors such as fate and luck.
Evaluation strength: replication of Milgram by Holland (1967)
found that a greater percentage of internals (37%) failed to go up to the maximum shock than externals (23%).
Evaluation weakness: Twenge et al (2004)
found people have become more external and more resistance to obedience.
Evaluation weakness: gender differences
Linz et al (2005) found men are more likely than women to have a high internal locus of control.
