The Characteristics Of Life Flashcards
Organism
A living thing
Metabolism
The sum of all the chemical reactions in an organism
eg. growth, movement, response, respiration
Continuity of life
Living things arise from other living things of the same type
Life
The possession of all the following characteristics
Organisation
Requiring nutrition
Excretion
Capable of responding
And reproducing
Organisation
Living things are composed of cells.
- some are unicellular, some multicellular
- cells are arranged into tissues that perform similar functions.
Nutrition
The way organisms obtain and use food
- The sun is the source of energy for all nutrition
Excretion
The removal of waste products of metabolism from the body
- Living things remove toxic materials that could damage the organism.
Response
The way in which all living things react to changes in their environment
Reproduction
The production of new indivduals
Sexual reproduction vs asexual reproduction
Sexual reproduction involves the union of sex cells
-the joining of two sex cells formed by two parents (offspring have genetic information from both parents)
Asexual reproduction does not involve the union of sex cells.
-simple organisms split into two or more identical offspring

Organisation
how do producers get food
Make food through photosynthesis
How do consumers get food
Eating plants and animals.
How do plants excrete
Stomata
How do animals excrete
Through skin, lungs and urinary system
