The Brain Flashcards
How many hemispheres does the Brain have?
Two - The Right side and The Left side.
What is the Cerebal hemisphere?
The Cerebral hemisphere is one half of the Cerebrum.
What is the function of the Cerebal hemisphere?
The Cerebral hemisphere controls muscle functions and controls speech, thought, emotions, reading, writing and learning.
Which side of the body does the Right hemisphere control?
The Right hemisphere controls the muscles on the left side.
Which side of the body does the Left hemisphere control?
The Left hemisphere controls the muscles on the right side.
What does the Cerebellum do?
The Cerebellum receives information from the sensory systems, the spinal cord, and other parts of the brain and then regulates voluntary motor movements ( posture, balance, coordination and speech).
What does the Corpus Callosum do?
The Corpus Callosum allows communication between the two hemispheres of the brain, transmitting neural messages between both the right and left hemispheres.
What does the Hypothalamus do?
The Hypothalamus is responsible for producing many of the body’s essential hormones and chemical substances that help control different cells and organs.
What do hormones from the Hypothalamus do?
The hormones from the hypothalamus govern physiologic functions such as temperature regulation, thirst, hunger, sleep, mood, sex drive and the release of other hormones within the pituitary gland and other glands in the body.
What does the Medulla do?
The Medulla carries out and regulates life sustaining functions such as, breathing, swallowing and heart rate.
What does the Pituitary do?
The Pituitary gland is part of the endocrine system and produces critical hormones, which are chemical substances that control various bodily functions.
What do the Meninges do?
The three layers of Meninges provide protection.
What are the three layers of Meninges?
The Dura matter, Arachnoid matter and Plea matter.
What is the primary function of the Meninges?
The primary function of the Meningesand cerebrospinal fluids is to protect the central nervous system
What is the function of the Plea matter?
The Plea matter is the meningeal envelope that firmly adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord.
