Function of Digestive System Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the Salivary Gland?

A

Salivary Glands are found in the buccal cavity, and moisten the food making it easier to swallow.
They contain Amylase, which starts the chemical digestion of sugars.

Q

What is the function of the Buccal Cavity (mouth)?

A

The Buccal Cavity breaks down food into smaller pieces and increases the surface area of food, to increase the rate of chemical digestion.

Q

What is the function of the Epiglottis?

A

The Epiglottis is cartilage behind the root of the tongue, which is depressed during swallowing to cover the opening of the windpipe.

Q

What is the function of the oesophagus?

A

The Oesophagus is a muscular tube, that leads the buccal cavity to the stomach. It uses peristalsis to push food down into the stomach.

Q

What is the function of the Stomach?

A

The stomach aids in mechanical and chemical digestion, where it will secrete enzymes responsible for breaking down carbs, proteins and fats, into smaller and simpler molecules. The end result is a soup-like substance called ‘Chime’.

Q

What is the function of the Liver?

A

The Liver in the digestive system processes the nutrients absorbed from the small intestine.
It also produces ‘Bile’, which emulsified fat and aids in chemical digestion in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum.

Q

What is the function of the Bile Duct?

A

The Bile duct carries bile from the gallbladder to the duodenum (start of the small intestine).

Q

What is the function of the Gall Bladder?

A

The Gall Bladder stores bile in the liver after its been secreted and before it is released into the intestine.

Q

What is the function of the Pancreas?

A

The Pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum and secretes hormones, insulin and glucagon into the blood.

Q

What is the function of the Pancreatic Duct?

A

The small gland between the Pancreas and duodenum, which carries digestive enzymes from the Pancreas, and to the small intestine, where chemical digestive can occur.

Q

What is the function of the Ileum?

A

The Ileum is covered in villi (finger-like structures), that increase the surface area of the small intestine, to increase the rate of absorption of nutrients into the blood.

16
Q

What is the function of the Large intestine?

A

The Large intestine absorbs water and the formation of faeces.

17
Q

What is the function of the Rectum?

A

The Rectum is where faeces are stored until they are passed out of the body through the Anus.

18
Q

What is the function of the Anus?

A

The Anus is the opening of the end of the digestive tract, where faeces (solid waste) leaves the body

19
Q

How does the Esophagus push food to the stomach?

A

The Oesophagus uses peristalsis, which are muscles contractions, that push food down it and to the stomach.

20
Q

What are three malfunctions of the Digestive System?

A

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Gallstones and Coeliac disease.

21
Q

What are Lacteals?

A

Lacteals are blood vessel like structures inside the Villi, that provide a route for fatty acids and glycerol are absorbed and drained into the blood through the lymphatic system.

22
Q

What is Assimulation?

A

Assimulation is when food molecules are transported into the cells.

23
Q

What is another role of the Liver in the Digestive system?

A

The Liver sorts out digested food molecules, which allows the food molecules into the capillaries and sent to the rest of the body.
