Respiration System Flashcards
What is the function of the Nasal Cavity?
Nasal Cavity passes air through in and out of the lungs.
Also traps dust that can harm the lungs.
What is the function of the Pharynx?
The Pharynx is the passageway that connects the nose and mouth to the oesophagus and trachea.
What is the function of the Epiglottis?
The Epiglottis covers the opening of the windpipe when swallowing food and drink.
What is the function of the Larynx?
The Larynx contains muscles and ligaments responsible for vocal cords.
What is the function of the Trachea?
The trachea is the tube responsible for transporting air in and out during inspiration and expiration.
What is the function of the Bronchus?
The Bronchus transports air from the Trachea and to the Bronchioles and Alveoli.
Also traps dust and pathogens through mucus, producing goblet cells.
What is the function of the Bronchioles?
The Bronchioles perform same function as Bronchus.
What is the function of the Alveoli?
Tiny air sacs that allow for rapid gaseous exchange.
What is the function of the Ribs?
The Ribs protect the thoracic cavity and its organs.
What is the function of the Intercostal muscles?
The Intercostal muscles are involved in the mechanical aspects of breathing. They expand and shrink the size of the chest cavity to facilitate breathing.
What is the function of the Diaphragm?
The Diaphragm plays a major role in breathing, as it contracting increases the volume of the thorax and inflates the lungs.
When the lungs relax, the lungs decreasing the volume of the thorax and deflating the lungs.
What are three malfunctions of the Respiratory System?
Emphysema, Asthma and Cystic Fibrosis
