Structure and Function of the Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Nervous System comprised of?
Central Nervous System
Brain
Spinal Cord
What is the function of the Nervous System?
The Central Nervous System is responsible for integrating sensory information and responding accordingly.
What are the functions of the Brain?
The Brain receives information from the Peripheral nervous system and initiates appropriate responses.
Initiates complex decision making, motor skills, speech, sight and is responsible for basic life functions.
What is the two functions of the Spinal Cord?
The Spinal Cord serves as a conduct for signals between the brain and to the rest of the body.
it also controls simple musculoskeletal reflexes without input from the Brain.
What is the function of the Peripheral system?
The main function of the Peripheral system is to connect the Central Nervous System to the limbs and organs (essentially a relay between the Brain and Spinal cord and the rest of the body.
What is systems is the Peripheral system divided up into?
The Somatic Nervous System
The Autonomic Nervous System
What is the function of the Somatic Nervous System?
The Somatic nervous system is involved with the voluntary control of the body movements via skeletal muscles.
What does the Somatic Nervous system consist of?
It consists of afferent nerves or sensory nerves, and efferent nerves or motor nerves.
What is the function of the Sensory neurons?
The Sensory neurons are responsible for converting externa stimuli from the organism’s environment into internal electrical impulses.
What is the function of the motor neurons?
Motor neurons transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles (such as those in your stomach), and so directly control all of our muscle movements.
