A
Erythrocytes
Leucocytes
Thrombocytes
2
Q
What is blood ?
A
Constantly circulating fluid which is a connective tissue in veins, arteries, Venules and arterioles providing the body with Nutrition, oxygen and waste removal
3
Q
4 components of blood
A
- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
- Platelets
- Plasma
4
Q
Blood function - Transport
A
- Transportation of O2 as oxyhemoglobin and CO2 as deoxyhemoglobin
- Delivery of nutrients from GI tract to cells
- Transport of hormones from endocrine system organs to target organs
- Transportation of metabolic waste
- Gas transport
5
Q
Blood function - protection
A
- Antibodies
- White blood cells
- Prevent blood loss with platelets and plasma - blood clotting
6
Q
Blood function - regulation
A
- Maintained of circulatory volume
- Maintenance of body temperature by absorbing and disturbing body heat
- Maintenance of normal pH in body tissues
- Act as reservoirs for bicarbonate
7
Q
Anatomy - red blood cells
A
- Haemoglobin
- Do not have a nucleus when mature
- No mitochondria
- Mature cells cannot divide
- Cannot use the O2 they carry
- Glycolysis to produce ATP
8
Q
Haemoglobin
A
- Has a quaternary structure which consists of 2 pairs of different proteins - alpha and beta chains
- Red pigment in blood - non protein which contains ion
- Globin and iron
- Binds to O2 molcules
- During breathing oxygen attaches loosely to ion and forms oxyhemoglobin
9
Q
How red blood cells are produced
A
- Haemotopoiesis - erythropoiesis
- Eythropoiesis increases when O2 levels in blood decreases
10
Q
How are red blood cells destroyed ?
A
Worn out cells are removed by macrophages in the bone marrow, spleen and liver
