How do we test for Hydrogen?

A
  • Remove the bung of a test tube and insert a burning splint.
  • Hydrogen gas burns rapidly and produces a pop sound.

How do we test for oxygen?

A
  • Use a glowing splint.

- If we place the glowing tube into the test tube of oxygen the splint relights.

How do we test for co2?

A
  • We use limewater.
  • Limewater is an aqeuous solution of calcium hydroxide.
  • Draw some of the gas into a plastic pippete.
  • Bubble the gas through the limewater.
  • Repeated several times limewater turns cloudy.

How do we test for chlorine?

A
  • Insert damp litmus paper into the mouth of test tube.

- Chlorine bleaches it and makes it turn white.
