Cracking Flashcards
1
Q
What is the problem with long-chained hydrocarbons?
A
- Not very flamable meaning they are not good fuels.
- Short chained hydrocarbons are in high-demand for fuels.
- To solve this, we can break down longer-chained hydrocarbons into smaller chained.
- Cracking.
2
Q
What is produced in cracking?
A
- Shorter chained Alkane and an Alkene.
-
3
Q
What are the 2 conditions for cracking?
A
- Catalytic cracking:
- Use high temperature and a catalyst.
- Speed up the reaction.
Steam Cracking:
- High Temperature and steam.
-
4
Q
What is an Alkene?
A
- Ends in “ene”.
- Double Covalent bond between 2 carbon atoms.
- Very useful.
CnH2n
-
5
Q
How are alkenes useful?
A
- Used to make polymers.
- Used as a starting material for other useful chemicals.
- ## More reactive than alkanes.
6
Q
How do we test for Alkenes?
A
- Using bromine water (orange).
- ## If Alkene is present with bromine water it turns colourless.
