Electrolysis: Flashcards
1
Q
What are electrolytes?
A
- When an ionic compound is melted or dissolved in water, the forces of attraction are broken and the ions are free to move.
- Liquids and solutions can now conduct electricity.
- Electrolytes.
2
Q
What are electrodes?
A
- In electrolysis there are 2 electrodes, made from conducting materials e.g Graphite or metal.
- Negative electrode: Cathode, covered with electrons.
- Positive electrode: Anode, lack of electrons.
3
Q
What happens during electrolysis?
A
- Negative Ions are attracted to the Anode and are discharged so become nuetral.
- Positive Ions are attached to the Cathode where they are discharged.
4
Q
What happens to the positive ions?
A
- Reduced.
- Gain electrons to to form an atom.
5
Q
What happens at the negative ion?
A
- Loose electrons to form an atom.
- Oxidisation.
