Electrolysis: Flashcards

1
Q

What are electrolytes?

A
  • When an ionic compound is melted or dissolved in water, the forces of attraction are broken and the ions are free to move.
  • Liquids and solutions can now conduct electricity.
  • Electrolytes.

Q

What are electrodes?

A
  • In electrolysis there are 2 electrodes, made from conducting materials e.g Graphite or metal.
  • Negative electrode: Cathode, covered with electrons.
  • Positive electrode: Anode, lack of electrons.

Q

What happens during electrolysis?

A
  • Negative Ions are attracted to the Anode and are discharged so become nuetral.
  • Positive Ions are attached to the Cathode where they are discharged.
