Crude Oil and Hydrocarbons. Flashcards
1
Q
What is crude oil?
A
- Formed over millions of years from the remains of tiny sea creates (Plankton), which were burried in mud.
- Mixture of molecules called Hydrocarbons.
2
Q
What are hydrocarbons?
A
- Made up of only hydrogen and carbon atoms.
-
3
Q
What is an Alkane?
A
- Have the general formula:
- CnH2n+2.
- Methane: CH4
Ethane: C2H6. - Propane: C3H8.
- Butane: C4H10.
4
Q
Why do scientists say that Alkanes are saturated?
A
- The carbon atoms are fully bonded to the hydrogen atoms.
