Potable Water: Flashcards
What is potable water?
= Water safe to drink.
= low levels of dissolved salts
= low levels of mircrobes.
=
What is pure water?
= no dissolved substances at all.
Where does the UK get their potable water from?
= Rain.
= Rain collects in ground as aquifers and in lakes, rivers and reservoirs.
How is potable water produced?
= find source of fresh water.
= pass water through filter beds- remove materials + suspended particles
= water is sterilised to kill microbes - uk is chlorine, ozone and ultra violet light can be used.
=
In the countries were fresh water is scarce and instead sea water is avaliable, how is potable water produced?
= Desalination.
= reduces levels of dissolved water.
What ways can we carry out deselination?
= distillation.
= pass water through a membrane-reverse osmosis.
= expensive, requires large amount of energy.
