Catalysts. Flashcards

1
Q

What are Catalysts in terms of the rate of reaction?

A
  • Increases the rate of chemical reactions.
  • They are not used up in chemical reactions.
Useful: Allows reactions to take place quickly, without needing to increase the temperature so saves money.
  • Reused.

Q

What does this look like in an activation profile?

A
  • Catalysts provide a different pathway for the reaction by directing a route with a lower activation energy.
  • Requires less energy to cross the activation barrier so more successful collisions per seconds.

Q

Key Points about Catalysts?

A
  • We do not include Catalysts in chemical equations of the reaction as they are not used up and are not a reactant.
  • Different reactions need different catalysts.
  • Enzymes act as catalysts in living organisms.
