Catalysts. Flashcards
1
Q
What are Catalysts in terms of the rate of reaction?
A
- Increases the rate of chemical reactions.
- They are not used up in chemical reactions.
Useful: Allows reactions to take place quickly, without needing to increase the temperature so saves money. - Reused.
2
Q
What does this look like in an activation profile?
A
- Catalysts provide a different pathway for the reaction by directing a route with a lower activation energy.
- Requires less energy to cross the activation barrier so more successful collisions per seconds.
3
Q
Key Points about Catalysts?
A
- We do not include Catalysts in chemical equations of the reaction as they are not used up and are not a reactant.
- Different reactions need different catalysts.
- Enzymes act as catalysts in living organisms.
