Test 3 - Ch 12 Flashcards
What is paresthesia?
Sx of neuropathic pain where a spontaneous or evoked message arises without stimulation of sensory receptors
What is dysethesia allodynia?
Sx of neuropathic pain when an unpleasant sensation arises from a normally non-unpleasant stimulus (sunburn)
What is dysethesia secondary hyperalgesia?
Sx of neuropathic pain that arises when pain is out of proportion to stimulus.
What are the four mechanisms of neuropathic pain?
ectopic
ephatic
central sensitization
structural reorganization
ectopic mechanism of neuro p
sensation is in different location than stimulus
demyelination - peripheral axon killed - central axon collects collateral sprouting - ligand and modality gated -
excessive production
ephatic mechanism of neuro p
short circuit from demyelination
tactile AP jumps to P neuron
central sensitization mechanism of neuro p
Learn P
strong or long P signal
NS increases receptor for easier transmission
hyperaglesia
Structural reorganization mechanism of neuro pain
long and strong
central axon backs off
tactile neuron innervates
